As a global logistics leader, we are taking bold steps towards a sustainable future with our carbon reduction goals
Peters & May is proud to announce that we have successfully renewed our certification with the internationally recognised carbon reduction and net-zero specialist, Planet Mark, reinforcing our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and driving more sustainable practices within the transport and logistics sector.
We first partnered with Planet Mark in 2023, pledging to reduce our emissions by 90% by 2050, in line with international efforts to cut global carbon emissions and to combat the ongoing climate crisis.
The latest certification acknowledges Peters & May’s successful reduction of scope 1 and scope 2 emissions by a reduction of at least 5% surpassing the minimum 2.5% reduction all Planet Mark members are required to achieve to maintain the certification.
Exciting Milestones
- Reduction in Carbon Emissions: Achieved a 5% reduction in scope 1 and scope 2 emissions over the past year.
- Ambitious 2050 Goal: Committed to a 90% emissions reduction by 2050, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change.
- Global Operations: Peters & May operates on a global scale, with sustainability embedded in every operation, from ship transport to air and land logistics.
“We understand the environmental responsibility we have, and as a leader in global logistics, we recognise the impact we have on the planet and are committed to achieving net-zero emissions,” says Michael Wood, Legal Director at Peters & May.
“Through our partnership with Planet Mark, we have established a new baseline, and we are continuously working on implementing data-led solutions to reduce our overall carbon footprint. Since the start of this journey, we have moved our Netherlands warehouse to a more modern facility, powered by solar energy. We have also changed legacy halogen lighting in our UK warehouse to motion sensitive LED lighting and we are embarking on installing a major solar installation in the UK. On top of this, we are encouraging our employees to use electric vehicles or other reduced carbon options for their commute.”
A Data-Driven Approach to Sustainability
Planet Mark helps companies measure, manage, and reduce their carbon impact by categorising greenhouse gas emissions into three scope categories and then suggesting the application of tailored data-led solutions. While scope 1 and scope 2 emissions have been the focus of the first two years and will continue to be; Peters & May’s next step will be to analyse its scope 3 emissions and set in place strategies to reduce those indirect emissions throughout its entire supply chain.
This next phase will enable more credible and realistic science-based net-zero targets.
“We are not just committed to compliance; we are setting the bar for the future of sustainable shipping, in the industry,” added Michael Wood. “As we move forward with our work on scope 3 emissions, we’ll be able to create science-based net-zero targets that will drive progress not just for us, but for the entire industry.”
Looking Ahead
With 2024 behind us, Peters & May is already planning for the future:
- Next Steps: A new focus on scope 3 emissions – indirect emissions across the entire supply chain.
- Goal: Achieve a 5% annual reduction in emissions for the next year, continuing the momentum towards net-zero.
By continuing to embed sustainability into every facet of our operations, we are not just ensuring compliance, we are leading the way towards a greener future in global logistics.
