Peters & May, a leader in marine logistics, was entrusted with the intricate task of arranging the shipment of a dismantled steel crushing plant from Puerto Rico to the UK. This complex project required a detailed assessment of the cargo to determine the most cost-effective and secure shipping solutions, emphasizing our commitment to providing bespoke logistic services.
Our initial step involved a comprehensive evaluation of the cargo, leading to the realization that a variety of shipping solutions would be necessary to accommodate the diverse sizes and weights of the components. Ultimately, the shipment comprised four large break bulk pieces weighing over 143 tonnes, six 40’ open top containers, two 20’ flat racks, and five 40’ flat racks, all classified as out of gauge.
Collaborating closely with the dismantling team, we established a precise timeline for the loading and transportation of each equipment piece to the port of San Juan. Despite the client’s preference for a single-vessel shipment to ensure simultaneous arrival in the UK, the disassembly delays presented significant challenges. Not all vessels in rotation could accommodate the entire cargo in one shipment, necessitating flexible and dynamic shipping arrangements.
Our solid relationship with the shipping line was instrumental in navigating these challenges. We dedicated ourselves to identifying the optimal vessel solutions, aligning with the disassembly’s fluctuating schedule while aiming to minimize waiting times and associated charges at the origin port. Our team’s availability 7 days a week ensured continuous communication, providing the client with timely updates and solutions.
Upon reaching London Gateway port, our commitment to excellence continued. We provided a professional surveyor to oversee the unloading of the break bulk cargo, delivering a detailed report and photographic documentation to the client. Our longstanding partnership with the port handling agent enabled us to offer enhanced assistance, updates, and services, further demonstrating our capacity to manage complex logistics projects.
Spanning 18 months from initial enquiry to the delivery of the final piece, this project stands as a testament to Peters & May’s expertise in delivering comprehensive shipping solutions from Puerto Rico to the UK. Our ability to adapt to challenges, combined with our dedication to client satisfaction, underscores our position as a preferred partner in marine logistics for projects of any scale.
